Major achievements
1. The OCTO-Plus intervention development and feasibility
As part of my doctoral research at IUFRS, University of Lausanne, I led the development and feasibility testing of OCTO-Plus, a family-centred support intervention for children with chronic critical illness (CCI) in paediatric critical care.
Families of CCI children face sustained distress and disrupted functioning, yet care remains organised around the acute episode, leaving their ongoing burden without preventive support. Using the Calgary Family Models and the updated MRC framework, I conducted four studies. A context analysis showed healthcare professionals (HCPs) endorsed family-centred care but practised it informally, constrained by workload and role ambiguity. A co-development study with parents and HCPs produced OCTOPlus’s components – family consultations, a family diary and interprofessional handovers – improving their clarity and acceptability. A HCP feasibility evaluation found the intervention acceptable and relevant, with HCPs reporting greater confidence and accordence with personal values despite time constraints. A pilot study showed reduced parental stress and meaningful improvements in family functioning, with no harm observed.
Rather than a single, temporary role, I built delivery capacity across the existing team, training interventionists while sensitising the wider unit, so change would outlast any one person – supporting the premise that strengthening family functioning reduces the burden of a chronically critically ill child.
2. Presidency of the Swiss Society of Intensive Care Medicine
I served as executive president of the Swiss Society of Intensive Care Medicine (SGI-SSMI), the national interprofessional society for physicians and intensive care nurses, a member of the FMH and the Swiss Federation of Specialities, responsible for specialist training, certification, quality assurance, research promotion and health-policy representation of intensive care medicine in Switzerland.
I approached the presidency as a role of enabling others: creating the structures and connections through which colleagues could pursue research, shape policy, or implement change on their own units.
I initiated a multi-year strategic process (“Profil 2030”), structured around working groups each led by a different board member and given ownership of a defined strand – such as certification and quality benchmarking, or transitioning interest groups into properly mandated commissions – while I coordinated timelines and follow-through across board and executive committee. I also lead the group supervising the transition of the postgraduate intensive care nursing qualification from the Postgraduate diploma studies (Nachdiplomstudium) to the Advanced Federal Diploma of Higher Education (Höhere Fachprüfung) format.
